Silicon metal, also known as industrial silicon or crystalline silicon, is produced by reducing silicon dioxide with a carbon reducing agent in a mineral furnace. It is a key raw material for the production of organosilicon, polysilicon, and aluminum alloys. Silicon metal is produced through a continuous electrothermal chemical reaction in a mineral furnace using silicon dioxide, a carbonaceous reducing agent, and a bulking agent. During the smelting process, the required materials are first delivered by the raw material handling system to the silo in the ore furnace workshop. Then, depending on the specific gravity, they are transported by conveyor equipment to the top bunker or storage silo on the operating platform of the ore furnace workshop. The furnace operator then adds the materials to the furnace.

Applications of High-Purity Silicon Metal

It is also used as an alloying agent in demanding silicon steels and as a deoxidizer in the smelting of specialty steels and non-ferrous alloys. After a series of processing steps, silicon metal can be drawn into single crystal silicon for use in the electronics industry.
